Are you networking? Are you meeting new people? Nothing happens until we connect with other people who can help us succeed! Do you belong to the right clubs, networking groups, or organizations? Are you "out there" networking at least three times each week? You should be! Word-of-mouth advertising is the best advertising for any business. Remember--your business is YOU!

Are you doing regular self-promotional mailings to those who can hire you? Have you considered postcard mailings, an informational newsletter, seasonal/holiday items as gifts to those who can hire you, hosting a networking event of your own? "Out of sight, out of mind," is a truism. All successful people must work to keep their image and their products or services in the public's mind and in the public's consciousness. Self-promotion should be done regularly and continually for results. Sporadic efforts seldom succeed. Targeted, focused promotion is the key to career success. Self-promotion takes many forms and the more of these you use, the more successful you will become.

Advertise! Advertise!
Whenever someone says that they're not being hired often enough for voiceover work or studio singing, whenever someone complains that their agent just isn't getting them enough jobs, I know instantly that that person is NOT self-promoting!

"Out of sight, out of mind." That old adage rings very true indeed in the voiceover and studio singing professions!

Here are some tips for promoting your name and your voiceover skills to producers and advertising agencies.

And remember--the web has changed everything in our profession! Now, you can voice projects all over the world. In times past, voice talents worked only for people who recorded voiceover work in specific cities!

Remember: Your agent (s) is NOT your mother or your manager or your career consultant (well, not all the time). YOU must promote your skills as a working talent (or you can remove 'working' from this sentence!)

Perhaps you fear failure? Perhaps you fear rejection? Examine your motives if you are a procrastinator. Examine your motives if you stay home instead of getting out and meeting new people.

Life is full of rejection and the performing arts are nearly rife with rejection. It's a fact of every performer's life.

Some people want us while others do not. Some employers hire us while others do not. It is a matter of finding the Perfect Fit for our talents and our happiness.

There is a perfect fit for every situation in life. Keep looking for your perfect job, perfect mate, perfect situation and you will find it. Life is a journey. Enjoy the trip!

Tips For Self-Promotion . . .
1. Mail your voiceover (and or) studio singing CD demo(s) to everyone your agent (s) suggests. Research potential sources of jobs on your own. Don't depend on your agents for everything. They are busy people handling large numbers of clients. You are your own BEST MARKETER. While you should always ask your agent for new names that were not on the agent's promotional list previously, you should be researching on your own and maintaining a mailing list and e-mail marketing list of your own! And mail your voiceover and studio singing demo regularly to new acquaintances who may be able to hire you or to refer your services to others.
2. Invest (very small amount of money) in a postcard (or print one on your own computer) and mail a "hello" to those people who most often hire voices. Use your agent's
list(s) and use the contacts you have made in your community (or through your website).
3. Create a website that advertises your talents and services to the world. If you are a voiceover talent, your site must be audio capable so that visitors to your site can click on and hear samples of your audio products or voiceover work.
4. The Pay to Play voiceover and jingle sites on the internet are also excellent sources to expose your talents to the world! I believe you should have pages on both www.voice123.com and www.voices.com Attend meetings of every group in your area where producers or advertising agency folks congregate. Get to know them! Bring copies of your voiceover or studio singing demo and give them to these new contacts. Collect business cards and follow-up with friendly "hello" notes to new acquaintances. And remember: Sometimes the person you meet may know someone he or she can tell about you. It's not always "who you know," sometimes, it's "who they know!"
5. Let your "day job" folks or your clients outside of the voiceover or studio singing fields know that you are active in these other fields. Someone may know about ways in which your company could hire you to voice projects. Spread the word that you are "a voice for hire" or "an actor for hire" or a "spokesperson for hire."
6. Get involved in actors' groups, stage organizations, little theatre, anywhere that actor-types or singers gather. You'll hear industry news. You'll find out who others are voicing projects for! You will make friends in the industry.
7. Encourage your agent (s) to sponsor "voiceover talent nights" so you can meet others whom your agent represents, gain a sense of comraderie, make new friends, and network.
8. Except for special occasions, promotional letters as advertising messages seldom are effective. We live in a "junkmail" world. People can throw 'junk' mail away without reading it. A postcard has to be read (or glanced at) before tossing it. Besides, postage costs less for a postcard!
9. Send a postcard whenever there's news to report about your activities. For example, show a photo of yourself meeting a celebrity. Include a photo of a recording session you've done. Briefly list recent voiceover jobs or other professional work. Work makes work! Appear to be "in demand!"
10. Do 'pro bono' (free) voiceover work for women's shelters, charities, anything that gets your voice out there on radio or tv. Ask the recipient of your free services for a 'deduction' letter to use at income tax time. You'll be doing a good deed and getting a deduction at the same time!
11. Use links to other websites on your site. Reciprocal linking works!
12. Your business card should look as good as you sound! Advertise your services.
